How to Nail the Basics
Jan 28, 2025Did you know that African elephants have the longest gestation period in the entire animal kingdom? It’s true.
It takes a whopping 645 days for a mother elephant to produce a baby elephant.Compare that to an animal like the opossum, which has a gestation period of just two weeks.
What does this have to do with losing weight and getting in shape? Well, a lot of over-40 men and women think getting leaner, stronger, and slowing aging is like the opossum’s gestation period when, in reality, it’s more like an elephant.
If you’re not willing to put in the work, the chances of you building your Ideal Body are unlikely. It can also take a long time to birth your Ideal Body.
In that sense, you must have patience and continue to do the work.
You must respect the “gestation period” that comes with losing bodyfat and, as a result, reducing your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer.
How to Nail the Basics
Listen, if I had a dollar for every time someone asked me, “Hey, Joe, what’s the secret to getting in shape fast?” I’d be typing this from my private island. People want abs yesterday, but they don’t want to put in today’s work.
They want that two-week opossum transformation. But let’s be real—if it took you 20 years to gain the weight, you think it’s gonna disappear in two weeks?
That’s like planting a tomato seed and yelling at the dirt an hour later because you don’t see a salad.
The key? Nail the basics. Master the fundamentals. Forget about detox teas, waist trainers, or that machine that claims to zap belly fat while you binge-watch Netflix.
Consistency Over Intensity
People get excited about new fitness goals like they’re joining an underground fight club. “I’m gonna wake up at 4 AM, run 10 miles, eat nothing but grilled chicken and sadness.”
Three days in, they’re hobbling around like they got hit by a bus, begging for a cheat meal.
You don’t need extreme workouts. You need consistent workouts. If you’re new to strength training, start with three days a week. Move daily. Eat real food. Prioritize protein. Sleep like it’s your job.
You don’t have to train like you’re auditioning for the next Rocky movie—just show up, do the work, and be patient.
The Power of Strength Training
Strength training is like compound interest—it pays off big time if you stick with it. You ever see an 80-year-old who lifts weights? They’re walking around like superheroes while their non-lifting buddies are struggling to get off the couch.
Lifting weights three to four times a week keeps you strong, preserves muscle, and makes sure you don’t turn into a human question mark as you age.
And no, ladies, lifting weights will not make you look like a bodybuilder. That’s like saying touching a basketball will make you LeBron James. It doesn’t work like that.
Nutrition: Keep It Simple
Diets are like cell phone plans—unnecessarily complicated.
Should you eat keto? Paleo? Carnivore? Mediterranean? Listen, you don’t need a PhD in nutrition to eat better. Stick to whole foods. Prioritize protein. Drink water. Cut the processed junk.
If your meal has more ingredients than a chemistry textbook, maybe reconsider. And if you can’t pronounce what’s on the label, your body probably doesn’t know what to do with it either.
The Importance of Sleep
You ever see someone brag about sleeping four hours a night? Like it’s a badge of honor?
Meanwhile, they look like an extra from The Walking Dead.
Sleep is where the magic happens. If you’re not getting at least seven hours a night, you’re making everything harder—fat loss, muscle gain, even basic functioning.
You wanna recover? You wanna feel good? Turn off the screens, get some blackout curtains, and stop treating caffeine like a food group.
The Elephant Mindset
Back to our elephant analogy. That mother elephant isn’t rushing the process. She’s not looking for shortcuts. She trusts the process, does the work, and, in time, produces something incredible.
That’s how you need to approach your health. No crash diets. No unrealistic expectations. Just commitment, patience, and consistency.
You put in the work, you stay the course, and one day you wake up feeling stronger, looking better, and moving like a well-oiled machine.
And when people ask how you did it, you can smile and say, “I nailed the basics.” Now, go get after it.
