Are You the Chicken or the Pig?
May 28, 2024Over the past 25+ years of coaching I've noticed a trend when it comes to unsuccessful people.
You know, the folks who set lofty goals and make big promises... yet never hit those goals.
Unsuccessful folks never quite dedicate themselves to the actual process of creating the leanest, strongest, and happiest version of themselves.
When you see someone walking around with visible abs and boundless energy, ask them this simple question.
"What's your number-one secret?"
Nine out of 10 times, they will shout from the mountaintop:
"Commitment!"
π Commitment means that you play the long game, that you are in it for decades versus days.
Commitment rises above bad weather, hectic schedules, and volatile emotions.
Commitment hangs in there when you don’t want to do it, when you don’t feel like doing it, and when you don’t have time to do it.
True commitment doesn’t depend on how you feel.
It depends on your integrity.
Living up to the promises you make to yourself.
Saying what you mean and meaning what you say.
Are you committed to lead by example for yourself, your kids, your grand kids?
Which is the perfect segue to the Chicken-and-Pig fable.
Are You the Chicken or the Pig?
Chicken and Pig are walking down the road.
Chicken says: "Hey Pig, we should open a restaurant together."
Pig replies: "Hmm, maybe, what would we call it?"
"How about 'Ham-n-Eggs'?" says Chicken.
π· Pig thinks for a moment and says: "No thanks. You'd only be involved, but I'd be committed!"
Side note: If they opened a lunch place called "Wings-n-Ribs" they would be equally committed.
Committing to excellence eliminates the weekend-warrior syndrome.
You may know a weekend warrior.
He's the person who does little physical exercise during the week, but when the weekend arrives, he blasts out of the gate like a stallion on Derby Day.
In a desperate attempt to make up for his sedentary behavior and poor nutrition all week, he goes to the gym or hits the pavement, pushing himself to the limit.
The result, however, is not what he expects.
He will likely end up with an injury, because his muscles, tendons, and joints are not conditioned for the intensity of his training.
But what's the underlying reason he fails to improve?
He's not committed.
π Getting rid of your dangerous belly fat, which can kill you, depends on consistency.
π Boosting energy without the need for stimulants, depends on consistency.
π Looking and feeling confident in your swimsuit depends on consistency.
π Being PRESENT for your family, friends, and co-workers... depends on consistency.
And consistency requires commitment.
It takes consistent, near-daily exercise to create your "Ideal Body" (the leanest, strongest, most athletic version of you).
You stimulate your cells, following the principles of progression and overload, and you make incremental progress.
How can I predict your results (and even guarantee them)?
A library's worth of scientific research says that if you follow a proven plan, and take action, you will succeed... without a doubt.
The fact that you DO something consistently is as important, or maybe even more important, than what you actually do.
In the immortal words of Yoda, "Do or do not. There is no try."
Even a low-intensity stroll with your dog, done daily, is infinitely better than "crushing" an occasional tough workout.
You see, the real rewards come when you not only commit to regular training, but you also commit to being consistent with those workouts.
You must commit.
For example, every successful client-athlete batch-preps meals ahead of time.
Take time to plan your grocery list.
Order online and get groceries delivered to your door.
Cook everything on large baking sheets in the oven.
Then package in stainless steel containers.
Plan ahead. And then stick to the plan.
In order to get the body that you desire and deserve, you do NOT need expensive clothes, fancy home-gym equipment or a complicated workout plan.
What you need is commitment. If you are committed, the rest of the pieces will fall into place.
You can start today.
Don’t overthink this.
Just start, and commit to doing something every single day.
